taking a stand

When I got into work this morning, I read a few things about M. Night and how he had made another bad movie. It took me a sec, but then I got it. WTF?! i thought to myself. I had the priviledge of seeing LITW with Robert and I will say with aplomb that I loved this movie. I am here and now taking a stand. Quite a few times I have given a good rating to a movie and was then later ridiculed for liking what others saw as total crap. Well I'm taking a stand. Opinions vary. It is the natural law of things. Well im doing as the title of this post suggests. Im taking a stand. I fucking LOVED Lady in the Water. I thought it was beautiful, funny, smart, and very engaging. Im going to watch it again in the theatres as soon as possible. Too often people will be lead by the opinions of others just to stay in with the cool people, and to not be thought a fool. Well not me. So go ahead. Ridicule away. Tell me i'm a hopeless sentimentalist and point out what you think are the films flaws. When the smoke clears ill still love this movie, and I will not be ashamed of that.

I haven't seen it, so. . .love away!

But you should probably be aware that the reason I haven't seen it is that I think M Night Shamalan is a pretentious twit who thinks he's just too clever for the rest of us plebians. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy his movies, I just don't think he's the movie god HE thinks he is.

umm how do you know what he thinks?

I with the Princess. Everytime I see M. talking, my impression of his egocentric meglomania grows. But, I do enjoy his movies...once. I usually catch all of the little hints in one viewing, and then it's a toss up whether I'll be surprised by the end. Regardless of my anticipating his denouement, a second viewing is usually a bit too much. They strike me as trying a bit too hard to be clever while ignoring adequate character development (what development there is seems forced and artificial...which gives his movies that deadpan feel), and the cleverness is usally not as clever as the built up anticipation of the plot demands (a lot of the time I find myself thinking how clever it was, but then realize that I'm just convincing myself of that in order to justify the hour and half of boredom I endured).
And...I didn't mean to go on a rant. Sorry. I should disclaim that I am NOT a professional movie critic, so my opinion should rest delicately juxtaposed to (but hopefully slightly above) useless. And, remember, I DO watch each of his movies that one time...so he must be doing something right. :) I can't wait until I can rent LITW! I love anything that has to do with faeries (I assume she's a water nymph...I haven't seen the movie).
PS Bully for you for taking a stand! Just remember that being "lead by the opinons of others" has a mirror side. Just ask almost any goth, freak or anarchist. :)

I have enjoyed all of his movies that I've seen so far, and am looking forward to this one.

I think it looks good enough--and supposedly it's not going to be a big "TWIST!" movie. Of course, someone told me last week they think I look like Bryce Dallas Howard--it's total BS, but I'm still flattered, and now I have extra good will for the flick.

EXACTLY! My opinion of him comes from his movies combined with the interviews I have seen. I like his movies pretty well, although the only ones I have seen are The Sixth Sense and Signs. I really, really enjoyed Signs, and did, indeed, think it was clever. Someone told me the secret on the Sixth Sense, so I have no idea how I would have reacted to it had I not known already.

Come to think of it, most of my bad opinion comes from the interviews I've seen. He just comes off as an ass.

And she's not a nymph, she's like a narph or something. This movie comes from the bed time stories he tells his kids. There's a pool right outside their bedroom window, and he created a whole world under the pool water for them. So there you go.

Funny story-the girl in the movie is Ron Howard's daughter, and she didn't see Happy Days until last year. Her dad thought it was egotisism to watch his own stuff at home, so she never watched his shows growing up. Last year, she decided she should really see it since she's always hearing people talk about it, and she loved it. PS-The Fonz is her godfather.

Oh, and in my own humble opinion, Shamaylan doesn't come across as even half as smug as Kevin Smith.

Or, either of the Andersons (PT or Wes). GAG. And, they're all about the same age.

Well, I've never seen interviews with them, so I don't hate them. Yet.

Cainnum, I applaud your decision to be steadfast. I understand your feelings. My opinion of M. Night is that his success is deserved, but that he's gonna be in pretty big trouble when he makes a movie without a catch. My opinion of Kevin Smith varies as far as him being smug, but even when he is, he's still self deprecating, and I identify with that.Uh, s-so...snap into a slim jim? Ooh YeaH! ?
